The Travels of Tug 44

SPS-54 - NYS Canal Corp.

The SPS-54 is a "Self-Propelled Scow", basically a barge with an engine added. The crane comes in handy during logging operations, and they are also used to put navigation buoys in the canal during spring and remove them in the fall.

SPS-54 is smaller than the rest of the fleet, allowing her to get into tight locations. Seen here, she has been driven almost up on shore and is being held in place by allowing her prop to spin at idle speed.
