Bannerman's Island Arsenal - Pollepel Island




This castle was built around 1900 by arms dealer Frank Bannerman VI to house his inventory of surplus Civil War era military equipment . The island appears on charts as Polipel Island with various spellings, but the castle displays the words "Bannermans Island Arsenal". The interior was destroyed by fire in 1969, but the shell remains as one of the Hudson's most interesting sights. Approach cautiously, there are rocks and shoals. See full-sized photo
