Barn Owl

The Barn Owl is a stealthy night hunter, we have them here in upstate NY year round, and they do not migrate..   high-res

They hunt mice, voles, lemmings, and rabbits and other small prey, but being night hunters they don't go after squirrels or chipmunks who are generally not active during that time.   high-res

They like to nest in cavities, particularly in old barns. They make their nest from their own regurgitated pellets, broken up by their feet. When nesting they will also store dozens of left-over prey by the nest for future use when the chicks hatch.   high-res

Being noctural, Barn Owls are seldom spotted and very very difficult to photograph. This one has a damaged wing, and was being displayed at the Winter Raptor Fest, a local event here.   high-res

The Barn Owl is a prodigious breeder, capable of producing as many as 18 eggs each nesting and as many as 3 nests each year. That means mortality is very high among the young Barn Owls.   high-res
