Common Snapping Turtle
Laying Eggs

June 2019, we spotted this female Common Snapping Turtle laying her eggs by the side of a busy road. She liked this spot because it was right next to a swamp which would provide safety for her hatchlings, and there is loose gravel there for easy digging.   high-res

She is using her rear legs to dig down maybe a foot or so, and then she dropped her eggs in the hole.   high-res

And here's a look down the hole while she is still shoveling it closed. Her hatchlings will dig thremselves out and head for the swamp in about 3 months.   high-res
