The Travels of Tug 44

Horned Grebe

The Horned Grebe is migratory, wintering in the southern states, and breeding in summer in western Canada ... but we did manage to spot this juvenile on the Hudson River in Fort Edward during the spring migration of 2019.   high-res

The Horned Grebe looks like a small duck from a distance but they have a straight narrow beak, good for catching fish and crayfish while diving. Both juvenile and adults have the distinctive red eyes plus a small red line running from the eye to the base of the beak.   high-res

The Horned Grebe, a cute little diving fisherman.
