2006 Erie Canal Flood - Lock 3 Yacht Club

Special thanks to Bob & Lynn Williamson on Legrace, and the Lock 3 Yacht Club, who provided these photos:

Palmetto Moon enters Erie Lock 2 on her trip westward, soon to be marooned at Canajoharie. See full-sized photo

A nice view of the Waterford docks. The water level is 4'-5' higher than normal but still safe. The squiggly line on the brick sidewalk is a map of the entire canal system. It appears that all the electric posts were removed to prepare for the coming flood. See full-sized photo

A day or two later, the entrance to Lock 2 is half submerged. See the stairs leading down into the water. The water level is about 12 feet higher than it was when Palmetto Moon came through. See full-sized photo

Here the Waterford Visitors Center has about 3 feet of water in the office. Note the twin ramps leading down to the floating docks now go upwards. Across the water, the signs are mounted in the submerged pier. See full-sized photo

Seen here is the Lock 3 Yacht Club! This location is half way up the flight and is one of the few spots where it was possible to safely regulate the water levels and provide refuge for the boats. Also seen here is the M/V Grand Erie. See full-sized photo

Here are some of the members of the Lock 3 Yacht Club, sporting their very cool new T-Shirts. They made the best of a very bad situation. See full-sized photo

The cleanup at Waterford ... what a mess! See full-sized photo

Canal Corp Director Carmella Mantello addresses the Lock 3 Yacht Club and the press. See full-sized photo

Let us not forget all the local folks who suffered the effects of the flood. Seen here is one of the main streets of Waterford. See full-sized photo

Rapids on the Mohawk River at Waterford became a raging torrent, much like Niagara Falls.. Photo provided by Dunbar & Reed Lawson on Adrianna III See full-sized photo
