Old Champlain Canal Lock 8
Halfmoon, NY

In winter 2008, we visit Old Champlain Canal Lock 8 in Halfmoon NY. This was a 9 foot lift lock built around 1862. This photo was taken from the ice over a few feet of water, caution.

The old lock is heavily overgrown except for a few gaps such as this one showing the lower entrance wall.

Some of the stones have been pushed out, probably by tree roots, in the notch where the gate once stood.

Just a few dozen yards north of old Champlain Lock 8 is this waste weir, once used to control the water level above the lock.
