Old Plantation Island Guard Lock
Plantation Island, Herkimer, NY

Here we have the site of an old Guard Lock from the old Erie Canal, hidden away on Plantation Island, also known as Lock 18 Island. The guard lock is about 50 yards west of Old Lock 41. As you can see, the island is completely overgrown and there are no open spaces near here. Members of our expedition, left to right: Howard Ohlhaus (noted canal photographer), Amelia O'Shea (author of 3 books on the old canals), Pat Robertson (former VP of Waterford Maritime Historical Society) and Greg Moore of nycanals.com.

In case you didn't spot the Guard Lock in the previous photo, here's a better look. This row of stones is all we were able to spot. Amy says this is the top of the guard lock, so it must be. On the other hand, it could also be the foundation of some farmer's house...
