The Travels of Tug 44

U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Tug Wire

We first met the U.S. Coat Guard Cutter Tug Wire at Port of Albany. The Wire is a 65 foot tug, built in 1963 by Barbour Boat Works. Tug Wire is an active duty Coast Guard boat and carries a crew of 6.

Tug Wire is designated by the Coast Guard as WYTL-65612 Small Harbor Tug. She is powered by a single Caterpillar 3412DIT, a turbo-charged V-12 rated at 500 HP.

Tug Wire is used for patrol duty on the Hudson River and Port of NY and NJ. She was built as an icebreaker and her 6 foot draft allows her to be used in shallow harbor areas. Today she is on display at the Waterford Tugboat Roundup where she is an annual visitor.

Tug Wire turns and heads back to her home port at Kingston NY on Esopus Creek.
